Who is Series: Who is God?

This was the third part of a series of three Messy Churches we ran, Who is Jesus? Who is the Holy Spirit? And Who is God?

We really wanted to encourage discipleship within our families, so we always need to keep going back to basics and not just assume that everyone knows the things we do!

In this Messy Church we wanted to explore who God is. We did this through looking at God’s creation and using a Outer Space theme!

We like to keep up with our families on their feedback on what they think of our Messy Church. Here’s what we got that month!

Crafts and activities – 50 minutes

Junk Spaceship building

On this craft we talked about being able explore God’s amazing universe!

Telescope – psalm 19:1

Sadly no pictures of this awesome craft!

We used kitchen roll insides and painted them black, used chalk and stickers to make it into a telescope. On the side we stuck on the verse ‘The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.’

Planets Poster2016-06-05-15-57-29.jpg

We took time to think about the universe that we live in and the fact that God made it!

Gingerbread people

Thinking of Gods wonderful creation we reminded ourselves that WE are part of it. God created us and he created us wonderful.

We bought a big pack of gingerbread people from Sainsbury’s and then used icing sugar, and other decorations to create our own AWESOME humans!

Mobius Strip

You can find this craft in the Extreme Crafts for Messy Church book. Definitely buy it’s it’s great! You can buy it here.

Fossil Prints

We also got this craft out of the Extreme Crafts for Messy Church book. This is what it ended up as!

This is a great craft to use to talk about how God created ALL things, including dinosaurs!!

Celebration – 20 minutes

After our Welcome and Crafts and Activities we go into a time of worship, which we call the ‘Celebration’.

As people are coming in we always have a song playing. We usually have a Fischy Music song playing.

Welcome – We start by welcoming everyone, asking people what they’ve done today in Messy church and what they’ve enjoyed.

Fandabidozzie – Doug Horley –  Which we got on Doug Horley – Action Songs Volume 3 DVD

We used our instruments for this video as the actions were a bit much for our kids!

We like to change things up all the time, so sometimes we tell a story, have a video, or act something out. And sometimes we take some time to think abut something important together. Today we talked about who God was, we used the awesome lyrics of Fandabidozzie:

He’s the gaffer, he’s the guv’nor, he’s the big, big cheese
Head honcho, head honcho
He’s the chief of our belief, he is the maker of our teeth
No greater, creator

El Supremo, numero uno, heaven’s number one
Espiritu Santo, come in power we cry to you

Fandabidozzie, fandabidozzie,
He is the God of everything
Fandabidozzie, fandabidozzie, boss of our lives

He’s the master, he’s the maker
He is heaven’s greatest baker
He is Lord of the “manna”, he’s the top enchilada
He invented the banana, he’s JC, our MC

In our family groups we talked about what those words meant to each of us.

We then moved into talking about some BIG questions about God.

The families loved these and we stuck them up in the church so that other users of the building could see them and start thinking!

Prayer Activity

Father Hear Our Prayer

We talked about how, even though God created the WHOLE world, we can still pray to God about all things! We got the families to write down something they’d like to say to God. We taught them the ‘Father hear our prayer’ song and sang it through 4 times with breaks for the families to pray into the microphone.

We then always finish our messy celebration with the Messy Grace with actions which can be found in the Messy Church books.

Food – 30 minutes

Then we come together for food! We always do party food as we meet on a Sunday afternoon. Families generally help us tidy away which is great!

We used this theme at Grangewood Methodist Church in June 2016
